This is an outpost of the Church of Sweden in this wonderful city. Its work is directed by a Church council with nine members. The present congregation was formed in 1988 and is part of a network of the Church of Sweden abroad in 45 locations around the world. We celebrate various church services on the second and the last Sunday each month (except July). The venue is The German Church (Martin Luther-Kirche), at 90 Goulburn Street in the City of Sydney, at 1.00 pm. Family services and/or open-air services are held a few times a year The Christmas service, generally on the Third Sunday in Advent, gathers a large number of Swedes. It is celebrated in the historic Holy Trinity (Garrison) Church at the corner of Lower Fort and Argyle Streets, The Rocks. The main object of the Swedish Church in Sydney is to celebrate divine service and to carry out church and community work for all Swedes living in Sydney and the State of New South Wales. The church wants to be a home away from home, where everyone can feel at home, and where one’s Christian faith can be nurtured and strengthened. OUR MINISTER is Rev. Katja Lin, pastor in Sydney. She conducts the church services, and also the rites of baptism, marriage, confirmation and burial. Pastoral care, home visits, hospital and prison visiting are also part of her work. For the latest information about the program of the Swedish Church in Sydney, please go to the following web address: http://swedishchurchinsydney.googlepages.com/home. Our first floor Church centre at Goulburn Street is open on Tuesdays, with office hours 10.00am to 12 noon. On Tuesdays, too, a Mums and Bubs group meets at 11.00 - 12 noon, which is followed by Open House until 3.00pm. Everyone is welcome to have coffee, read magazines and papers, send email or simply talk for a little while. On the second Thursday evening of every month we invite women of all ages to a 'Girl's Night' and on the last Thursday night in the month we meet to watch a quality Swedish movie on video. Please note that the entrance to the Church Centre is at the back of the block, in the narrow little Nithsdale Lane. There is a sign with a Swedish flag on the door, and during opening hours, there is a door-bell to ring. You are welcome to DROP IN on Wednesday nights at ”Café Svensson”, 96 Goulburn Street, Sydney, between 6.00 and 9.30 pm. The Café serves all Swedes in Sydney, permanent residents or those staying for a limited period, e.g. students, au-pairs and tourists. Café Svensson wants to be an open door and a “home away from home”. It provides a form of practical Christian service and has become a very popular meeting-point, run completely by volunteers. Here, besides coffee and home-made cinnamon buns, you can buy open sandwiches of various kinds, and waffles with jam and cream. Swedish sweets and chocolates and certain foodstuffs are also available for purchase.
