Svenskor i Sydney (SiS) is the oldest of the Swedish clubs in Sydney and the best-known
meeting point for all Swedish women, both those who are newly arrived and those who
are well established, and their families.

The club was founded in 1960 by a number of Swedish women who felt a need to keep
in contact with each other, in this city which at that time felt so far away from our
homeland. They also wanted to keep Swedish traditions alive, by celebrating together,
and took on the responsibility of organising Lucia and Midsommar celebrations. In
2000, we moved with the times and changed our name to Svenskor i Sydney (SiS),
but our aims are still the same: to preserve our Swedish culture, language and
traditions in a spirit of togetherness and friendship. At the same time, we all want for
our club to be alive and to be open to changes, one that it is forward thinking and meets the
needs of modern Swedish women living in Sydney.

To summarise our Constitution, our aim is that we work with and for each other, for our
mutual joy and benefit. We also have a good time together, meet new people and get
to know each other

The club continues to grow and now we have around 170 members. We organise a lot of
activities and opportunities to get together. We arrange traditional events, such as the
Valborgs celebration, as well as women’s only dinners; we have evenings where we get
together at one of our homes (‘at home’ evenings) with guest speakers, pub crawls, visits
to art galleries and walks and we share in the organisation of Lucia and midsommar. We
have a very active Mother's group, with parents and pre-school age children who get together
every week, and many of the older children keep up their friendships at the Swedish
School.

If you want to be part of this great group, and meet other Swedish women in Sydney,
print out and send us a copy of the membership application form, together with a cheque or
direct deposit for $35 ($40 from 1 November, 2009) – made out to SiS Swedishwomen in Sydney
to our Membership Organiser. Apart from the address, the other information is optional – the
information will not go outside our club – and provides the basis for the details which go on
our membership list which is provided only to other members. If you have any skills or
talent or an occupation which you are prepared to share with other members, for
example, at one of our ‘at home’ evenings, please fill in this part of the form. This
information will be made available only to members of the committee.

When you become a member, you will receive a copy of the Constitution, a copy of the
membership list, and the next issue of Kvintessen. You will also receive invitations to
the events that SiS organises as they come up.
We welcome you to SiS, hope that you enjoy being a part of us, and that you
meet many new friends through our club.
